The plot revolves around the surprising story of a fugitive Moscow official who, by chance, lands a job as an "inspector" in a small town. It all begins with a briefcase full of diamonds and a twist of fate. Zotov, a Moscow official, was not known for his scruples and never refused a bribe. But a mistake had unexpected consequences, and now he's trying to evade justice. Fleeing the capital, he swaps identities with an investigator named Pletnev, who lost his memory in a fight. He was conducting a routine inspection in the Velikozelsk province, which turns out to be the perfect place for the disgraced Zotov to hide. Undeterred, he carries out his duties as an inspector while the real Pletnev regains consciousness in a Moscow hospital. He's not alone; a dangerous man is already on his trail, convinced that he escaped with a fortune he doesn't even remember touching. Two lives swapped and a lie that grows stronger every day, and a truth that will eventually come to light. Each deception draws him closer to the abyss, and to the woman who could uncover everything.
